1/14th scale Polikarpov I-16

The introduction of this new plan marks the third time I’ve modelled the Polikarpov I-16. My first, published in Aeromodeller many years ago was a peanut scale version. More recently I won the Pistachio Scale class at the UK Indoor Nationals with a tiny I-16, so despite its looks, it a winner! Designed to 1/14th scale my Polikarpov I-16 plans build up into a really pleasing rubber powered model. Beautifully detailed plans show instructions to build a model with optional detachable landing gear. The comprehensive accompanying instructions, full of photographs and hints on technique talk you through each stage of the build.

The model has a wingspan of 25 inches, which despite it’s bulk, builds into a surprisingly lightweight design. To aid stability, the wing has increased dihedral from scale and the tailplane is enlarged. However, these changes don’t detract from the character of the model.

My prototype flies very nicely on 3 loops of 1/8” rubber, driving an 8 inch commercial propeller. Although no details are shown on the plan, the Polikarpov should convert nicely to Radio Control, with either ‘full house’ or 3 channel control (throttle/ailerons/elevator).
